What is Nookta No Limits?

Nootka No Limits is the name for a hiking expedition that will be undertaken in 2010.

In May of 2010, a team of 10 people will be travelling to Nootka Island, British Columbia where we will battle the elements in hopes of Christine Selinger being the first paraplegic woman to complete the Nootka Trail, 35 kms of rugged back-country trail through some of Canada's most unforgving wilderness. Depending greatly on travelling speed, the hike will take between 7 and 9 days.

Christine will be doing this on an all-terrain handcycle designed to be able to handle most of the trail's challenges. This is a great undertaking, as the Nootka trail is a very treacherous hike.

First Fundraiser!

Hey all-
The Nootka Trail Team Regina Division (a.k.a. Christine and Steph) will be holding a Steak Night fundraiser at Brewster's South on Thursday, February 4. This is our first fundraiser, and we hope to see a lot of friendly faces there!

What:
It's a steak dinner! A $15 ticket gets you a delicious steak, baked potato, and caesar salad (vegetarian options available)
We will also be doing a 50/50 draw at the event

Brewster's South

Drop-in anytime between 5:30 PM and 9:00 PM

Why:
To raise some of the funds needed to purchase/make Christine's three-wheeled off-road handcycle.

The Team

Christine Selinger: The Star
Age: 22
Regina Division

On December 18, 2006 Christine sustained a spinal cord injury in a rappelling accident just outside of Kamloops, BC, at the age of 19. From that day forward she has made it her mission to pursue what she loves in life without letting her disability stand in the way. In the summer of 2008 Christine began kayaking with the Wascana Racing Canoe Club in Regina, Saskatchewan through which she has won 2 National Gold Medals in both the K1 200m race and the K2 500m race. Just this past summer Christine won a bronze medal at the ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships in the PaddleAbility Mixed K2 200m event. Christine also actively pursues other sports of both a recreational and competitive nature including tennis, curling, alpine, nordic and water skiing.

Chelsea Selinger: The Coordinator
Age: 25
Kamloops Division

Chelsea Selinger is Christine’s sister from whom the idea of this project spawned. Chelsea is currently studying tourism in Kamloops, BC, and has had countless hours of experience in British Columbia’s great wilderness. As a graduate of Thompson Rivers University’s Adventure Guide Diploma Program, Chelsea is schooled in many technical outdoor pursuits. Her certifications including hiking, sea kayaking, rope handling skills, and wilderness medical protocols. It is through this professional training as well as her countless personal endeavours that Chelsea feels she has the ability to assist her sister through an expedition of this magnitude.

Stephanie Robertson: The Coach
Age: 25
Regina Division

Accompanying us on this hike will be Stephanie Robertson, Christine’s kayak coach, from Regina, Saskatchewan. Steph has been working as Christine’s personal fitness trainer and coach for the last two years. Steph’s qualifications include 14 years of paddling experience, as well as an active outdoor lifestyle including personal trips of camping, hiking, biking and winter pursuits such as cross country skiing and snowshoeing. Steph graduated from Dalhousie University with a degree in Kinesiology, is a Competition Development kayak coach, a community cross country ski coach and is certified in first aid.

Greg and Amy: The Island Experts
Kamloops Division

Amy Benskin and Greg Simmonds are both experienced sea kayak guides from Vancouver Island whose expertise on West Coast marine habitats will be invaluable during this trip. Amy has been employed by Strathcona Park Lodge and Northern Lights as a sea kayak guide for five years. Greg has spent many years as the head sea kayaking guide for Rush Adventures as well as has done private guiding by contract. Both of these individuals are also graduates of the Adventure Guide Diploma program, hold similar qualifications to Chelsea, and will be bringing local knowledge and technical skills to assist in the success of our endeavour.

Ken Attwood: Photographer

To document our trip we will be accompanied by Ken Attwood, an accomplished photographer with the capacity to document our expedition with professional quality photography. Ken Attwood is a 37 year old Victoria, BC native who now resides in Kamloops, BC. Shooting professionally since 2006, Ken has chosen not to compromise his artistic vision for a quick buck. Ken’s passion for capturing still life has complemented his nature loving lifestyle. Recreationally, Ken is an avid snowboarder, mountain bike racer, and rock climber. He has also worked as a Level 3 EMTB with Sun Peaks Ski Patrol.

Roland Moonie: The Medical Support
Kamloops Team

Roland Moonie RN BScN is an avid backpacker and rock climber with a background in medical and rehab nursing. Roland will be providing support to Christine and the rest of the team members during the expedition. Roland is also GSAR and Rope Rescue certified. His greatest achievements include Yosemite’s Half Dome (the hard way), and convincing his 7 year old son that backpacking is fun. On rare occasions he has been known to read a map, and brew a mean cup of coffee.
